I’m pretty sure that this information is all over the net, but to be honest it’s here mostly as a resource for myself and my iPhone-owning friends to be easy to find.
To add a custom ringtone, you need to follow these steps.
- Locate an mp3 you want to use as a ring tone
- If its a full song, trim it down to 30 seconds long (by using an audio file editing package such as Adobe Audition)
- Now import this 30 second file into iTunes
- Right click it in the library and select convert to AAC
- Find this new file and move if out of your library folder
- Rename the extension from .m4a to .m4r
- Import it back into iTunes - it will then be recognized as a ringtone
- Sync to your iPhone and bob’s your uncle!
