BBC Radio 1 Stream on the iPhone

As i have found out, Windows Media Streams and Real Audio Streams are not natively supported on the iPhone… while browsing my so far favorite application (Tuner - which is currently missing from the app store as it happens) i found the BBC Radio 1 Stream Relay (192k)

I’ve been on a few forums and people are asking if this is possible…

When Tuner is back on App Store i strongly recommend you purchase it - it was only £2.99

UPDATE - 19th July 15:40

I’ve tried this stream again today and it appears to be unavailable. I’ll keep testing it throughout the day and report back my findings.

Digg!

    Hey Nigel,

Well, the Tuner app is back on the iTunes App Store (although it has now gone up to £3.49 from £2.99…..

… although the Radio 1 stream appears to have gone for good… i bookmarked it at the time and the bookmark has now been changed to “TranceTraffic Radio”

I’ve sent a support request to Nullriver though who wrote Tuner, have to wait and see.

Any news on this? I’m guessing the people who hosted the stream might’ve been given a slight telling off from the BBC, or maybe they were just using it for testing, Who knows.

Like this blog, but by the way, you can use the home button and sleep button at the same time to take screenshots of your iPhone!

    Please do… we are desperate!

Live, 3G enabled TV and radio on the iphone (with a secondary stream for Edge/GPRS connections) would be absolutely mindblowingly awesome.

Apple, o2, the BBC. There is still time. Step up and make a change.

Just got an iPhone 3G and am surprised there is no real player or similar app that will allow me to listen to BBC radio stations via their website.

I am hoping this will be sorted before the cricket tours of india and the caribbean. Need the live stuff, replayed is pretty pointless.

Guys, Ftream advise was certainly well placed. You can indeed configure Iphone Live Streaming BBC radio from the Fstream app.

Download Fstream from Itunes onto your iphone.

I did this by EDITING AN EXISTING MMS radio station as I couldn’t add a new one due to there being no : (colon) on the keyboard used to edit the stream.

Change the name to BBC radio (2 or 4 or whatever)

Then after the MMS:// type the following:
(It’s long so don’t get it wrong or it won’t work!!)
    wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/radio2_nb_e1s1?bbc-uid=f4c72f0f6e3e846974e262486010633984c740a49010715444ef1052ac08a8ec&amp

    If you change the
    wms/radio2/radio2_

    for

    wms/radio4/radio4_

    You get radio 4

I haven’t tried the others but I have had these working today.

now, I am assuming that UID stands for unique ID, so I don’t know if these change on a daily basis, or if multiple streams can work with 1 UID? Let’s find out though!!

Anyway, BBC Radio can DEFINATELY be configured to work with FStream.

    Happy listening…

    Dave

  13. AJMegaughin Says:

    Or, you can just enter
    MMS://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/radio2_nb_e1s1

i.e. the Uid is not required !

Incidentally, the colon (:) is on the numeric keyboard.

I have just tried the fstream app and the work around that dave published works A1
You have to take your time to enter the url correctly but it works well, although fstream stops working as soon as the iPhone screen sleeps.
and i did find the colon : so you can create new favorites to incude other bbc radio feeds
I had radio 1 and radio 2 working before i posted this
its not perfect due to the shut down with screen sleep but its definitely a start!

    here’s the url again
    mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/radio2_nb_e1s1?bbc-uid=f4c72f0f6e3e846974e262486010633984c740a49010715444ef1052ac08a8ec&amp

like Dave says be careful and get the type right
change the “radio2/radio2″ to “radio1/radio1″ for radio 1

    Good luck

I tried your method to get Radio 1 (found this site via Google), and after typing in that lengthy URL, it worked perfectly! I’ve been dying to listen to these stations on my iPhone; it had actually been my #1 complaint about the phone for a while now. Thanks!

  20. Josh Says:

Fstream has enhanced it’s ability to parse asx files and now supports playing while the screen is locked. However I think part of the problem some of us are having is that BBC seems to only do teh MWA streams for some services outside the UK; while they stream them all in real player.

Hi, Thanks for the post, this is certainly a step forward. I was just wondering if anyone had been able to find the paths for any of the other BBC radio sites? I would really like to find 6 Music and 5Live / 5Live Sports Extra if at all possible?

    Cheers.

I tried the link suggested by Dave when I was in England. It worked fine on my IPhone using the WiFi link to the internet. I did not try it using 3G outside the house. On my return to Germany it does not work on 3G or WiFi. It tries to connect for a few seconds but there is no download and it then disconnects.

Has anybody out there gopt any idea why this should be happening and can I fix it ?

Thanks for any help - Ian.

    Hi!

Does anyone know the format of Five Live’s URL, following the mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/radio2_nb_e1s1? syntax?

I’ve tried replacing the above example with “radio5/radio5″ and “fivelive/fivelive”.

Radios 2 & 4 work fine for me.

    Cheers,

    Steve

Hi everybody, been following this thread with keen interest in the run up to getting an iPhone. I found “WunderRadio” in the app store, and it delivers BBC presets just fine, even when the screen sleeps. It’s GBP 3.49 but has a heap of positive reviews to back it up. You can even toggle bitrates (if available) but so far, and despite using it mainly at home (i.e. with wi-fi) it seems to maintain a 3G connection, with correspondingly low bitrate. More than adequate though.

On another note, having poor FM reception where I live, and a couple of Bose iPod docks, it’s brilliant being able to use them now as “internet radios” without forking out for yet more kit.
