BBC Radio 1 Live on iPhone - SOLUTION FOUND
Finally, this hurdle has been overcome…
http://blog.garryrenshall.co.uk/bbc-radio-1-stream-on-the-iphone
As i detailed in a previous post, i thought i had a way to listen to the radio 1 live stream on my iPhone… now there is a fully working and legit method of doing so.
May I introduce you to FStream [App Store Link]
This is a free app (get is fast before they decide to charge for it) that will allow you to stream ASX (Windows Media)

In order to get the radio 1 stream, you need to add a favorite (i edited an existing one) and use the following URL..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/wm_asx/aod/radio1.asx
…. you can leave the bottom two fields empty and click save. I’ve been listening to Radio 1 for about 15 mins now and its working fine. Its only 20kbps but its a start!!!

Excellent job. I tried to listen to BBC 5live the same way, but it won’t connect. Please do you have the URL for their ASX stream?
Thanks, Jon.

In answer to my own question, yes, the app does, no the BBC 1 stream doesn’t.
Very cool app though, thanks for pointing it out!

I’m trying to make this one work with swedish radiostations but I can’t make it work. The list of Windows media streams is published here http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/mall/artikel.asp?ProgramID=2321&artikel=2260956 but none of the ones I’ve tested works in the program

There is an app called WunderRadio which has all the BBC stations and others listed.
Confirmed I’m listening now, and yes it is rubbish quality, but there’s a lot of choice.
I got the BBC stations by letting it select my “local” stations by GPS

…just to add, there’s an app on Cydia for jailbreakers called “backgrounder” which allows you to selectively make any program run in the background via the home button. i’m sat here with the phone locked playing radio 1 now, and if i wanted to i could do some browsing/other stuff without stopping the music. we have truly reached the promised land.

I have downloaded this and entered the URL, but instead of the screen saying ‘listening’, mine says ‘disconnected’. What am I missing?

this website does a pretty good job of explaining to people how to listen to BBC Radio on your iPhone/iPod Touch (all of the national stations): http://www.bbcstreams.com
